The industrial production index is an economic indicator that tracks the output change of the industrial sector each month versus the previous month. The index takes into account subsector outputs like manufacturing, mining and utilities. The statistic is published monthly by the Japanese Ministry of Economy Trade & Industry.

In May 2017, the Japanese industrial production mom fell by 3.6% versus the previous month, missing the consensus estimates of -3.3% by -0.3 percentage points. Historically industrial production rose the most by 6.8% in May 2011 and fell the most by – 16.50 in March 2011.
