Aston Martin Racing drivers Nicki Thiim (DN) and Marco Sørensen (DN) have today been crowned world champions after taking victory in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s season finale in Bahrain. Aston Martin Racing claimed its first ever World Endurance Championship title.
A season that started with difficulty and disappointment for one of sports car racing’s most iconic brands eventually ended on a positive note as Aston Martin Racing clinched the GTE-Pro drivers’ title at the Six Hours of Bahrain.
What drivers say
Looking ahead to 2017, Thiim is expecting more of the same in his plans, with a particular focus to defend his title.
I want to challenge myself all the time, and I did that this year making the change from Audi to Aston. Many didn’t agree with it, but I said I wanted a new challenge and I wanted to do a full season in WEC. Not even one year after I signed a deal with Aston, I’m champion and it’s amazing.
Thiim’s teammate Sørensen added,
It’s absolutely amazing to win the championship and I’m going to say it’s even more incredible to win it with a Danish brother like Nicki. When we were 10 years old, we raced against each other in karting but to be here winning a championship with him and Aston Martin Racing is fantastic.
Nobody would have thought we could be here together. I’m so proud of the whole team. We had a lot of new partners at the beginning of this year but it all just came together so well and today has been fantastic. I still can’t really believe it.”
Nicki Thiim and Marco Sørensen won the FIA World Endurance Cup for GT Drivers, while the team was victorious in the FIA World Endurance Trophy for GTE Pro Teams.
